Courses & Career Guide 2026

Choosing a career is easy. Getting accepted is the hard part.

Every course in South Africa has a unique set of “gatekeepers”—specific subjects, APS scores, and NBT results. If you don’t meet them, your application is rejected automatically.

This page breaks down the exact requirements for South Africa’s most in-demand careers and institutions. Whether you want to save lives, build bridges, or teach the next generation, your roadmap starts here.

1. Career Pathways: “I Want to Be a…”

Don’t know where to study, but know what you want to do? Start here. These guides cover the requirements across multiple universities.

Health Sciences (Nursing & Pharmacy)

Medical fields are the most competitive in the country. One mistake in your application can cost you a seat.

Education (Teaching)

South Africa needs teachers, but universities have raised the bar. You need more than just a passion for kids; you need specific APS scores for the BEd degree.

Agriculture

Agriculture has moved from “ploughs” to “drones.” It is a high-tech, high-growth industry in 2026.

2. Institution Spotlights: Specific University Requirements

Already have a university in mind? We have deep-dive guides into their specific faculties and prospectuses.

3. Short Courses & Skills (Fast-Track Learning)

Not everyone needs a 3-year degree. In 2026, skills often matter more than paper.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Diploma and a Degree?

A Degree (NQF 7) is usually theoretical and focuses on “why” things happen. It is offered by Universities.

A Diploma (NQF 6) is practical and focuses on “how” to do things. It is offered by Universities of Technology and Colleges. Both are valuable, but they lead to different career paths.

Can I study Nursing without Maths?

It is very difficult. Most public Nursing Colleges require Maths (or Maths Lit with a high mark) and Life Sciences. However, you can start with a Higher Certificate in Auxiliary Nursing, which has lower requirements, and then bridge up.

Is a private college qualification valid?

Only if it is registered with the DHET and accredited by Umalusi or the CHE. Always ask for their “Registration Number” before you pay any fees. We cover this in our “Avoid Scams” guides.
